The rise of TikTok cleaning hacks has opened our eyes to household items that we have cleaned incorrectly all the time.
Since many of us want to use the warm weather to their advantage and for cleaning, the experts at PriceYourJob have given tips on how to best clean our bathroom items such as taps, toilets and bathtubs.
Advice to keep your bathroom clean longer includes scraping off residue and lime with the 1-pence coin trick and scrubbing the tub with half a sugar-coated grapefruit.
Elsewhere, another social media user suggests stripping laundry to remove debris such as colored residue and stains on towels.

TikTok user @ aligrams3 recommended cleaning a bathtub with half a sugar-coated grapefruit, while @mrslaurenelms suggested removing the laundry to remove product and oil build-up on clothing
1. Bathroom towels
TikTok user @mrslaurenelms demonstrated how all deposits of fabric softener and body oils that remain on clothing can be removed even after washing. Pictured on the left, clothes soaked in a bathtub with hot water and a mixture of detergent, laundry stove and sodium carbonate (washing soda) and the residue left on the right
A viral video by TikTok user @mrslaurenelms reminds how during normal washing, fabric softener, body oils and minerals can remain on your towels and leave colored residues and stains. Removing the laundry is the solution to remove deposits.
Laundry strips: Fill a bathtub with hot water and a mixture of detergent, laundry booster and sodium carbonate (washing soda).
Make sure they dissolve first before adding the towels. The chemical reaction before dissolving can accelerate color change and stain retention.
Add the laundry and let it soak for up to four hours. Finally, run the load through a water-only cycle in the washing machine.
Removing laundry is great for bedding and towels, but is not recommended for colored clothing as this can result in loss of color.
2nd REMOVE LIMESCALE
TikTok user @ Kirstykearney6 unveiled the 1p coin trick to remove excess residue and lime scale (Figure)
Limescale deposits are common in the bathroom and mostly occur on taps, bathroom fittings and between tiles.
To remove limescale from the taps, soak and wrap a cloth with half a vinegar and half a water solution.
Leave on for a few hours or overnight, then scrape off residues if necessary. You can even use the 1p coin trick as seen on TikTok.
Another way to combat lime is to use lemon juice using the same method as above, or to simply wipe surfaces with it. Remember to rinse one of these surfaces afterwards.
TikTok user @ aligrams3 revealed that the acidity of a grapefruit fights hard water and soap residue and brings a wonderful smell to the bathroom (image)
A common misunderstanding is that the bathtub does not need to be cleaned regularly when washing. Unfortunately, that's not true.
How to clean the bathtub: To reduce vapors, open windows and doors and / or turn on a fan before starting.
Spray the bathtub and shower area with a bathroom cleaner (general or bathtub-specific) and let it stand for 20 minutes. Then just wipe and rinse.
Interestingly, grapefruit is another great way to clean the tub. Revealed by TikTok user @ aligrams3, add sugar to half a grapefruit and start scrubbing – the acid fights hard water and soap scum and brings a wonderful smell to the bathroom.
Remember to rinse off afterwards.
4. SHOWER CURTAINS AND MATS
TikTok user @ hann731 recommended that the shower curtains be soaked in a tub of hot water and four tablespoons of chlorine-free bleach for one hour
Shower mats and curtains are changed rarely enough, and damp bathrooms can leave mats and curtains with mold or bad smell.
Treat mildew or mold problems first: fold curtains and mats inward to prevent the spread of mold spores.
Place them outside on the floor and brush away as much mold as possible. Fill a tub with hot water and four tablespoons of chlorine-free bleach, then add the mat / curtain.
Leave on for an hour, then shake and rinse in a tub with fresh water. If the curtains need extra washing, just add them to a normal cycle.
TikTok user @ dr.m_ suggested cleaning the toothbrush by soaking it in antibacterial mouthwash (see picture).
Most of us run toothbrushes under water before and after brushing. However, this does not mean that they are clean – especially between bristles.
How to clean toothbrushes: One way to fight the build-up of bacteria in your toothbrush is to put it in antibacterial mouthwash. Stir the bristle end for 30 seconds and voila!
If you don't have a mouthwash, dissolving a denture cleaner or a mixture of two teaspoons of baking soda in water works just as well.
TikTok user @imagineitdone cleans her toilet by covering a brush with baking soda and scrubbing the inside before adding a chlorine tablet to the tank (Figure).
Most Britons use bleach or other disinfectant, then scrub and then simply wash the toilet bowl to clean it. But as TikTok user @imagineitdone reveals, that's not enough.
When cleaning the toilet bowl, pay close attention to the tank. Open and flush the lid of the toilet tank to slightly lower the water level.
Brush a brush with baking soda and scrub the inside. Then add a chlorine tablet to the tank so that the source of the flush is clean.
