A prisoner cut off his penis in his cell after being told that his wife did not want to see him on a conjugal visit.
Prison workers saved the life of the nameless inmate after bleeding to death from his shocking act of self-mutilation and taking him to the prison health center.
The terrible incident took place on Christmas Eve in module 10 of a prison called Puerto III in Puerto de Santa Maria near Cadiz in southwestern Spain.
An inmate at a prison called Puerto III (pictured) in Puerto de Santa Maria, near Cadiz, Spain, cut off his penis after his wife refused a marital prison visit
An association called TAMPM Puertos, which represents prison workers in the city's three prisons, confirmed: "An inmate amputated his penis because his wife did not want to go to prison to see it."
It wasn't immediately clear whether medical professionals could reattach the sex organ.
Local reports said he was suffering from psychiatric problems.
In September a prisoner was hospitalized in Spain after eating his own ears.
The nameless 30-year-old is said to have cut off his earlobes with a homemade knife in his cell before swallowing them.
He passed out after perpetrating his shocking cannibalism at around 10 a.m. on September 26 in a prison near Badajoz, southeastern Spain, and being overpowered by prison guards.
Well-placed sources told the Spanish press that they couldn't find the missing body parts and suggested that he either ate them or flushed them in the toilet.
The weapon the prisoner used is believed to have been a knife he made by attaching a piece of plastic to a small piece of sharpened metal.

The unnamed inmate was being treated in a psychiatric wing of the Badajoz University Hospital at the time.
Local reports said he had previously tried to harm himself but had never injured himself as badly in the past.
It was not made clear why he was in jail.
Prison guard unions told the local press the chilling episode revealed what could happen if people who should be in safe psychiatric units were held in normal prisons.
A union source told El Periodico de Extremadura at the time: "There are few centers of this type in Spain and they are clearly inadequate."
