It is divided into different ranks, the oldest of which makes people knights or ladies.

A senior Commons Honors Committee member said the recent protests had rekindled the debate over the empire's link with brutality and slavery.

"This has been a live issue for a while, but since the protests, committee members have been discussing it more," a source told The Times.

"Some members are in favor of removing the word 'empire' from existing honors, others would prefer it, others would prefer the introduction of a new medal that better reflects a more diverse 21st century Britain."

The source added that the change is "only open to discussion" at the moment but could lead to a full government review.

A cabinet spokesman denied the allegations, telling MailOnline: “There are no plans to do this. The honor system has undergone major reforms over the past 25 years to ensure that it is inclusive.

"There is year-round engagement to ensure that deserving people from diverse backgrounds are nominated and we continue to work to ensure that the honor system represents British society."

Labor MP Lisa Nandy has previously spoken out in favor of removing the word "Empire" from the name in order to make the award more comprehensive for people with a BAME background.

Earlier this year, Lisa explained to Nandy why she didn't believe OBEs should refer to "empire".

Earlier this year, she insisted on removing references to Britain's colonial past in order to make the country "different" while advocating to become Labor leader.

"The confident, empowered country I will lead will be different," she said during a Labor leadership cough.

“Where people like Benjamin Zephaniah can accept the Order of Excellence, don't reject the Order of the British Empire.
