The bank said on Twitter that there were problems with online banking, although some users were still able to access the app.

The social media accounts were inundated with complaints from customers desperate to transact on the last Friday of the month – payday for many employees.

The outage also comes before the bank holiday weekend, when millions of dollars will be spent.

One frustrated user described it as "possibly the worst day that a problem occurs".

Reports from users on Twitter suggest the outage may have occurred since 9 a.m. on Friday morning, while Santander made its statement around 1 p.m.
