A man extradited from the United States was convicted of murdering Thai citizen Wachira & # 39; Mario & # 39; Phetmang, whose body was found tied up and gagged on the Sydney roadside.

38-year-old Alex Dion was indicted on Sunday for murdering Mr. Phetmang in 2018 after he came from Sydney to Sydney under police protection from California.

Mr. Phetmang's body was discovered last June by a truck driver who was bound, gagged, and wrapped in plastic and covered with a mattress protector.

An autopsy of his body showed that he suffered more than 20 wounds on the head and had several skull fractures.

The 33-year-old former café and spa employee lived in Australia for at least 10 years and was permanently resident at the time of his death.

Mr. Phetmang was last seen alive on May 25 at a gas station in the South Hurstville suburb of Sydney.

His body was found two weeks later on Homebush Bay Drive in Sydney Olympic Park.

Dion, an American, is said to have left Australia on May 27, more than a week before the body was found and formally identified.

The Australian authorities issued an arrest warrant for him in September 2018.

NSW police traveled to the United States last week to take Dion back to Australia after he was arrested by local authorities last year for another matter.

He was taken from the airport to the Sydney Police Center on Sunday and charged with murder.

Dion has been refused bail and will appear before the Central Local Court on Monday.
