Tens of thousands of protesters gather in the capital of Belarus for the fourth week of daily demos

Tens of thousands of protesters sang, "Happy birthday, you rat!" at Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on his 66th birthday during the fourth week of the demonstration, in which his resignation was demanded.

At least 100,000 people gathered at the Hero City memorial to pay tribute to Minsk's suffering and resilience during World War II.

Lukashenko spent his birthday in his residence in the capital, where he was again portrayed with an assault rifle.

He received a phone call from Vladimir Putin inviting him to Moscow, a symbolic demonstration of Russia's support in the face of EU sanctions and the US's disapproval of the dubious August 9 election result.

Nationwide demonstrations with more than 80% landslide occurred through Sukiatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a former teacher and wife of a popular jailed blogger.

Lukashenko, who has been in office since 1994, was defiant but beleaguered and unable to put down the biggest and most sustained wave of protests to date in this Eastern European nation with 9.5 million inhabitants.

Mr Putin and Mr Lukashenko spoke by phone on Sunday, but a statement from the Kremlin contained few details of the conversation other than that Mr Putin had congratulated the Belarusian leader on his 66th birthday.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya, who fled to Lithuania for security reasons after the elections, confirmed the birthday withering away.
