St. Athan is the "preferred" location for the UK's first gigafactory

A site in St. Athan, Wales is groundbreaking for the UK's first gigafactory. This was announced this morning.

The company behind the proposed battery factory has narrowed its selection from 42 to just two locations, with the location in Wales being the “preferred choice” over one in Coventry.

At a completely new production site for lithium-ion battery cells, which Tesla's plants in the United States and China call a "gigafactory", "at least 3,500" new jobs would be available in Wales.

St. Athan could become a center for electric vehicle development in the UK after Aston Martin Lagonda's decision to build cars in a state-of-the-art new facility at the former Department of Defense following the purchase of the property in 2016.

Both eCube Solutions – an aircraft company – and Bristow Helicopters are located in the same 1,200-hectare Bro Tathan business park, which is strategically located near Cardiff Airport and has its own airstrip.

The development of a British factory is of paramount importance, according to experts. By 2025, the domestic battery industry is expected to be worth £ 5 billion.

This is because the demand for lithium-ion cells is booming in a number of industries.

The best known is the automotive sector, where manufacturers are making increased efforts to electrify their range of vehicles.

Britishvolt, the company that leads the selection process for the first Gigafactory location in the UK, said that demand for the latest battery technology may be limited as the UK government strives to meet its Road to Zero targets by 2050, including the ban on the sale of new gasoline. Diesel and hybrid cars from 2035.

The initial wave of £ 1.2 billion investment in the site will ultimately result in around 3,500 jobs.

The company also announces plans to build a solar park next to the factory to support sustainable battery production and achieve low-carbon goals to ensure the company plays a real and active role in the global green agenda.

Lars Carlstrom, CEO of Britishvolt, said: & # 39; We want to deliver scalable onshore production and a diverse portfolio of premium lithium-ion batteries to support the unprecedented transition to electrification – especially for the automotive and energy storage markets .

& # 39; After six months of careful analysis, Bro Tathan is the preferred choice due to the number of different factors.

"The Welsh government welcomed us with open arms and impeccable care. The region meets important criteria such as the accessibility of imports / exports, the availability of workers and qualified personnel, and the convenient geographical proximity to customers and local industrial companies."

The Welsh government told the BBC that the St. Athan site was the main candidate for the UK's first gigafactory: “We have worked with Britishvolt on this project for a long time and are delighted that you have chosen Bro Tathan as your shortlist a place for its landmark Gigafactory.

"We firmly believe that Bro Tathan is a compelling argument, especially for a company that wants to become one of the greenest battery manufacturers in the world."

Britishbolt said plans for the battery manufacturing plant would make it one of the three largest single prints in Europe.

"The plant will be one kilometer long and 30 meters high and will require more than 80 hectares of land. Because of the energy intensity in the production of lithium-ion cells, nearby renewable sources are of great importance," says Carlstrom.

"Our goal is to become one of the most environmentally friendly battery manufacturers in the world. This will be made easier by the creation of our own solar park, which guarantees an almost climate-neutral power input."

He added: Our ultra-modern and highly efficient Gigaplant will employ at least 3,500 local Welshmen.

& # 39; These will span a wide range of disciplines and create a local ecosystem of 10,000 to 15,000 additional jobs for the broader supply chain – including material suppliers, contractors and local services.

& # 39; By the third quarter of 2023, we plan to have the first phase of our facility fully operational, and assume that between 40 and 60 percent of the initial £ 1.2 billion investment will go directly to the selected one Community flow will be a real catalyst for the growth of the local economy and Britain. & # 39;

Recent reports suggest Tesla is considering building a new gig factory in Somerset, despite earlier claims that Brexit would not open a store in the UK.

A Property Week report alleged that the Department of International Trade (DIT) was looking for 4 million square meters of space on which the U.S. company could build a research, development, and manufacturing facility.

A 635 hectare site in the Gravity industrial park near Bridgeater is said to be the leading candidate.
