James Redford – son of legendary actor Robert Redford – died Friday at his home in Marin County, California, aged 58, after battling liver cancer.

On Monday morning, his wife Kyle went on Twitter to post a gallery of photos of the filmmaker and activist to commemorate his life.

She wrote: & # 39; Jamie died today. We are heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, effective life and was loved by many. He will be missed very much.

"As his wife of 32, I am very grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don't know what we would have done in the past two years without them."

Redford fought primary sclerosing cholangitis – a rare autoimmune disease of the liver – for nearly 30 years.

Kyle later confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune that her husband had died of biliary tract cancer in his liver that was discovered while awaiting a transplant last November.

His health problems had started from childhood when he received two liver transplants in 1993.

The philanthropist founded the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness, a nonprofit that aims to educate people about organ and tissue donation.

He later founded the nonprofit The Redford Center with his 84-year-old father, Robert, whose goal is to produce films and even provide grants to filmmakers who focus on the environment and climate in order to find a solution to climate change.

He made several films including 2013 Paper Tigers, 2016 Resilience, and 2017 Happening: A Clean Energy Revolution.

His most recent film, "Playing For Keeps," premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival this month as it was largely screened virtually.

Redford's wife, Kyle, also told The Salt Lake Tribune that he was nearing completion of directing Where The Past Begins. This is a documentary for PBS's American Masters tracing the immigration journey of Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan.
