The officers were called there shortly before 9:30 a.m. after the man threatened an emergency worker.

One resident said that the armed police had asked him to stay inside, but it has become "incredibly quiet" since then.

Since then, countless police officers, firefighters, a dog handler and an ambulance have been seen on Ham Drive in Plymouth, Devon.

A police spokesman for Devon and Cornwall said: "At 9:28 a.m., the police were called to a property on Ham Drive Plymouth after an incident in which rescue workers were threatened by a man with a large power tool.

The police are currently on site and are working with the inmates at an address in Ham Drive to find a safe solution.

"This incident is ongoing."

A local resident said he saw unmarked vans arrive at the scene, but had heard no excitement on the street.

He said: "The police only say that they should stay inside – without giving information. There are also six to eight armed police and dog handlers.

"My wife wanted to run, but the police turned her over."
