A selection of rare photos of Audrey Hepburn, taken during two of her lead roles, sold for £ 6,000.

The legendary British actress was filmed in the epic War and Peace of 1956 as well as The Nun & # 39; s Story, published three years later.

In the first, an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic novel, she played the heroine Countess Natasha Rostova.

The collection of 14 photos, which have since passed into the hands of a private collector, is being sold with the US auctioneer Nate D Sanders.

The new photos show the beauty of Hollywood in various poses for the film.

One pair portrays her both from the front and the side, in others she wears a hood and a tiara, and in a third the actress is hugged by co-star Henry Fonda.

Hepburn can also be seen in the pre-production footage of The Nun's Story, in which she played Gabrielle Van Der Mal, an upper-class woman who abandons her privileged existence to become a nun.

The British actress, who died in 1993, is said to have liked the photos, of which there are 14 in total, so much that she kept them for the rest of her life.

They are now being sold as single photos through US-based auctioneers Nate D Saunders. The minimum bids are between £ 464 ($ 600) and £ 774 ($ 1,000).

It is believed that Hepburn took the photos to experiment with different looks for their characters.

Hepburn received her third Oscar nomination in her role in The Nun's Story, in which her character became known as Sister Luke.

The film is said to have had a profound influence on her and she later returned to Africa where it was filmed to do some charity work.

A spokeswoman for Nate D Sanders said, “These rarely seen pre-production photos show various suggested hairstyles for her character to help decide which style to use.

"It's fair to assume that she's captured them how she liked them all these years, and it reminded her of memories of working on the films."

Hepburn, who later also appeared in Breakfast At Tiffany & # 39; s (1961) and My Fair Lady (1964), died at the age of 64.

The timed sale ends on September 24th.

Hepburn was born in Belgium in 1929 as the son of a Dutch baroness. Throughout her training, she studied ballet and had the ambition to become a professional dancer.

At the end of the Second World War, Hepburn moved to London, where she was discovered in 1950 during a performance of Cecil Landeau's "Sauce Piquante".

From there she experienced a meteoric rise to the height of the film industry.

Just three years later, she got her first lead role in Roman Holiday, and the performance won BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar awards.

The actress, who has had roles in 25 films, devoted much of her time to charity and philanthropy.
