A 15-year-old girl drowned after being swept away in a swollen river during Storm Ellen.

Schoolgirl Nicola Williams had been playing with friends on the banks of the Rhymney River in Cardiff when she fell into fast flowing water.

A friend jumped in to save her, but she was carried away – and it was an hour before ambulance services found her on the winding river next to Cardiff University's sports fields.

The alarm went off and a huge fleet of emergency services, including police, coast guards, paramedics and firefighters, rushed to the riverside in Llanrumney, Cardiff.

Search boats and helicopters were also used, and Nicola was pulled out of the water after an hour of hunting.

Her family has been described as "devastated" in the tragic riverside drowning – a popular spot for strollers near Rumney Rugby Club.

Friends and family paid tribute to Nicola – one friend wrote: “I can't believe what happened. I love you so much that I will see you again soon. & # 39;

Another said: 'RIP nice. Missed by loads. We all love you and we always will. You were taken too soon. Heaven has won another angel. & # 39;

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “We were called to a report on a girl in the river on Ball Lane in Llanrumney at 5:20 pm today.

& # 39; We participated with a number of other emergency services and the police helicopter.

"At around 6.40 p.m., a 15-year-old girl was found who unfortunately died despite all the efforts of the emergency services."
