Actress Emma Corrin has won rave reviews for her portrayal of the troubled Princess Diana in The Crown.

But – as our exclusive images show – her first stage kiss shows that she has a pedigree when it comes to playing the victim in a doomed romance.

When she was 20, Corrin was photographed starring in a Cambridge University production of Brian Friel's tragic comedy Philadelphia, Here I Come!

For the key scene, Corrin, who wore a cropped hairstyle, had to have a passionate kiss with the play's main character, Gareth & # 39; Gar & # 39; O & # 39; Donnell, who was played by James McMullan. The play was staged by the University's Emmanuel Dramatic Society in February 2016 when Corrin was studying English, Education, and Theater at St. John's College.

The drama takes place in the fictional Irish town of Ballybeg the night before and the morning of Gar & # 39; s departure for a new life in the United States.

As he ponders his future, Gar also reflects on the relationships that have shaped his life – including his romance with Kate Doogan, played by Corrin, a local woman he wanted to marry.

But the couple's dream of marital happiness is shattered when Doogan's father, a local politician who disapproved of the relationship, prevents him from making a proposal.

The play's themes of thwarting love and family betrayal clearly put 24-year-old Corrin in her lead role in The Crown.

The student newspaper The Tab was full of praise for the actress. The reviewer wrote: "Although there is not space to discuss every performance, Emma Corrin brings a particularly breathless, youthful excitement to the stage of how the lover Gar should have married in his youth." Her later turn as a shy member of Gar & # 39; s group is incredibly realized. "

Corrin, who was born in Royal Tunbridge Wells, showed a passion for acting from a young age. She was an acting scholar at Woldingham, a girls boarding school in Surrey, and finished school as assistant headmistress.

A spokesman for the school described her as an "excellent student" last night.

Before enrolling in Cambridge, Corrin studied at the London Academy of Music and Performing Arts and Bristol University.

The Crown's current series, which began this month, is the most controversial yet. The breakdown of the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales is a central plot in the ten-part series.

But while Corrin has gained recognition for her portrayal of the princess, many commentators have criticized the drama of slandering Prince Charles, played by Josh O'Connor, and spreading lies about their marriage.
