The mother of two, who married Sir Rod in 2007, said the experience made her realize how underfunded the police are.

Both her husband and her parents admitted concerns that she might join the group, but Penny said in an Instagram live chat with her former Strictly Come Dancing partner Ian Waite that she was determined to rise to the challenge.

She added: “My mother and father are not so enthusiastic about the idea, but I can't wait.

"I feel sorry for the police right now because they really, really cut out their jobs for them to create social distance while trying to arrest someone."

Sir Rod, 75, said earlier: “Nobody has ever been able to stop Penny if she chooses to do something. And I'm always all the way behind her.

"But am I afraid for her? Yes a little. Did you see this drug addict who threatened to stab her on the TV show with a needle?

"As long as she's accompanied by another policeman at all times, she'll be fine."
