"Three PSG players were confirmed positive after a Sars CoV2 test and have gone through the appropriate health protocols," the club said on social media.

"All players and staff will be tested further over the next few days."

All three players will now spend time in quarantine – the first PSG game of the new season will take place in eight days, on September 10 against Lens.

Currently, the game is not believed to be in doubt.

Positive tests have already interrupted the start of the new season. The opening game of the season between Marseille and St. Etienne was postponed when Marseille reported four positive tests.

The PSG trio is not the first high-profile footballer to test positive in recent weeks.

Manchester United star Paul Pogba tested positive for coronavirus along with Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele when he met with France on an international assignment last Thursday. The couple has been isolating themselves for 14 days.

Chelsea was rocked last week by a multitude of their stars who caught the virus. Six players tested positive.

Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Emerson and Michy Batshuayi have also stayed away from the Cobham training base in Chelsea, although it is not known which six players tested positive.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Wolves winger Adama Traore tested positive before joining his Spanish international teammates on Tuesday.

However, Traore is now waiting for the results of a second test to see if the first was false positive.

A total of 14 positive tests were recorded from the 12 Premier League clubs that returned to training two weeks before the new season.

The new Premier League season starts on Saturday September 12th.
