A man is in custody after allegedly beating a baby so severely that it has suffered a catastrophic brain injury.
The 39-year-old was extradited from Queensland and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station near the New South Wales border, where he was charged with neglect, aggravated assault, and intended to distort the legal process.
NSW detectives claim the man beat up a 23-month-old girl on March 9 in a holiday park northeast of Grafton.

Three days later, she was taken to Maclean District Hospital with life-threatening injuries, 9News reported.
She is still in serious condition and officials have been informed that she suffered a catastrophic brain injury as a result of the attack.
A 24-year-old woman has also been detained to assist the police with the investigation.
The man was refused bail and was due to appear in court on Wednesday afternoon.
