Love Island's Zara Holland apologizes to the people of Barbados after breaking quarantine.

Love Island star Zara Holland has apologized to the government and people of Barbados after breaking quarantine to flee the island when her boyfriend tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement made on behalf of the former Miss England, the 25-year-old model claimed her decision to break Barbados' strict coronavirus rules was a "massive mix-up and misunderstanding".

Miss Holland and Elliott Love, 30, were arrested by officers at Grantley Adams International Airport after violating their quarantine conditions to stay at their hotel when Elliott tested positive for the virus on Tuesday.

A statement posted on the Barbados Today news website said: “I would first like to apologize to the entire country of Barbados for the massive mix-ups and misunderstandings during my last visit.

“I am currently working with local authorities to resolve issues on my part and I will be issuing an update and full statement which I believe is the only right thing for the government and citizens of Barbados.

"I've been a guest on this beautiful island for more than 20 years and I would never do anything to endanger an entire nation that I only love and respect and that has treated me as family."

The couple were initially isolated in a special quarantine facility from Covid-19 in northern Barbados.

Miss Holland has since been released after testing negative for the virus a second time, but Mr Love is staying at the facility, Barbados Today reported.

Elliott's brother Harvey told MailOnline: “Zara is not under quarantine. She is in a hotel. "

The Love Island star who stays on the island faces up to 12 months in jail and a £ 18,000 fine for violating Barbados' strict Covid-19 quarantine rules.

The two are believed to have had a test when they arrived on the island on Sunday.

After receiving his result on Tuesday, they reportedly received red wristbands – given by hotels to guests who had not yet been tested for the virus – but allegedly cut them off and tried to get to the airport by taxi.

A £ 300 a night employee at the Sugar Bay Resort Hotel reportedly found the bands and called the police who reportedly found the couple at the airport where they were arrested.

In Barbados, the Daily Nation reported yesterday, “Sources told the Daily Nation that the high-profile couple was taken into police custody and then placed in quarantine (facility) in Harrison Point, St. Lucy.

Upon their release, they could face charges of violating quarantine protocol, which could result in a fine of $ 50,000 (£ 18,000), a year imprisonment, or both.

Covid rules for visitors to Barbados

Prior to arriving in Barbados, visitors are required to fill out an online form and preferably include an upload of their negative COVID-19 PCR test result.

Travelers from high and medium risk countries will then have to get a second test on the island.

While waiting for the results, visitors must restrict their movements to their accommodation and cannot have visitors.

If the result is positive, the person will be examined in a government facility for at least 24 hours. After that, you have the option of self-isolating yourself at your own expense or going to a place of state isolation such as the Paragon Military Base.

However, if a positive test is returned, the visitor cannot return home. They need to isolate until they recover. Once you've recovered, you can continue your vacation or return home, explains Visit Barbados.

The country has had just 383 Covid cases and only seven deaths since the pandemic began.

The couple, who have been together for four years, came here last Sunday on a Virgin Atlantic flight and were due to be quarantined at a hotel in Christ Church. Visitors must be cleared after two mandatory tests, which usually take around three days.

After health department officials told them one of them had tested positive, the couple apparently removed their red bracelets, got into a taxi to Grantley Adams International Airport and tried to book a flight back to the UK on board British Airways .

& # 39; Sources said while the male is in isolation until he has recovered from the virus, the 25-year-old model, who won a major beauty pageant in the UK, has been in quarantine until tests prove she doesn't have the virus would have. However, if she turns out to be positive, she too will be isolated. & # 39;

A tourist was jailed for six months earlier this week for violating Barbados' strict Covid-19 protocols, despite only showing up for a drink.

Dean George Scott, 49, of Jamaica admitted leaving quarantine to buy Fanta and other snacks after arriving on the vacation island in early December when he appeared in court.

Chief Justice Ian Weekes said the verdict was a "clear warning" to others.

He said, “I have to send a message to you and everyone else that this cannot be tolerated. We won too much so you have to do six months. Leaving quarantine, nobody, cannot be allowed. & # 39;

Other guests at Sugar Bay are not required to be quarantined due to the couple's alleged violation. The employees are confident that no one else has come into close contact. However, visitors will be isolated on arrival until a negative test is confirmed.

The couple was believed to have been detained in a Covid ward at St. Lucy Hospital in northern Barbados before Holland was allowed to return to a hotel.

A Barbadian police spokesman said: “Zara Holland has been released from a medical facility to go to her designated hotel. Elliott Love will remain at the medical facility. & # 39;

Dr. Kenneth George, the island's chief medical officer, said, “There are three tourists who are of particular interest. Two are in quarantine and one is in police custody.

Two were arrested at the airport. This is a police matter and I trust that the relevant evidence will be produced. & # 39;

A spokesman for the country's Ministry of Health and Wellness added: “Police questioned at least three tourists about alleged violations.

"We will take decisive action against anyone who violates protocols."

Meanwhile, local reports in Barbados said that airport workers were quarantined after coming into contact with two British tourists believed to be the couple.

Last night the Foreign Office confirmed they were aware of the antics of Zara Holland and Elliot Love.

An FCDO spokesman said: "We support a British man and a British woman in quarantine in Barbados and are in contact with their families."

MailOnline has asked Zara's representative for a comment.
