Lockdown rules may be required until AUTUMN: Professor Neil Ferguson warns that easing restrictions will be a "gradual process" that will take months as the PHE chief says England faces a difficult time before Easter

The UK lockdown rules could be required by the fall, scientists who advised No10 warned today.

"Professor Lockdown" Neil Ferguson – whose grim modeling that 500,000 Brits could die if no action were taken terrified ministers at the first national shutdown in March last year – said the curb loosening was a "gradual process" .

When asked if there might be restrictions for many months, he said, “Yes, and we cannot predict any of these things in advance.

"We couldn't have predicted this new variant, but the new variant will no doubt make it harder to relax restrictions because it is much more portable."

Professor Ferguson, epidemiologist at Imperial College London and a member of SAGE added, "It will be a gradual process by the fall."

Dr. Susan Hopkins, one of the top Public Health England (PHE) officials, added that England is likely to have a "difficult time" at least until Easter.
