President-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, released a Christmas message to Americans calling it a "very difficult year" and setting out a number of COVID-19 sufferings.
"Many of our fellow Americans struggle to find work, literally put food on the table, pay their rent or their mortgage," said the president-elect. “Many families are about to celebrate their first Christmas after losing a loved one. And Joe and I know this grief, ”added the arriving first lady.
Their grim message contrasted with the video that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump released on Christmas Eve, which painted a sunnier picture thanks to the coronavirus vaccine.

& # 39; We are supplying millions of doses of a safe and effective vaccine that will soon end this terrible pandemic and save millions upon millions of lives. We are grateful to all of the scientists, researchers, manufacturing workers and service members who worked tirelessly to make this breakthrough possible, ”said the President.
"It really is a Christmas miracle," he added.
The new president is spending Christmas at home in Wilmington, Delaware, while Trump traveled to Mar-a-Lago, his resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
In the days leading up to the vacation, Biden had asked the Americans not to travel.
The president-elect didn't even cross the state of Delaware – as he did on Thanksgiving – to spend the vacation at his Rehoboth Beach home.
The Biden-Harris transition team released a cheekier video on Christmas Eve with the arriving first dogs Champ (left) and Major (right) Biden
"For the Bidens we usually have 20 to 25 people for dinner on Christmas Eve, but not this year," said Joe Biden in Friday's Christmas message. "We will miss our family, but it is what we have to do to protect our family."
"We hope this year you will consider eliminating travel and the size of family gatherings," added the president-elect.
Jill Biden said: "We celebrate separately, but not alone."
"Even if our celebrations are dimmed, we know it won't be forever and brighter days will come soon," she offered.
The Biden transition had released a cheekier vacation video on Christmas Eve, in which the first two dogs – Champ and Major Biden – could be seen.
In place, a muted champ sits under the Christmas tree while a savage major walks around the house with toys.
"No matter how you celebrate, Merry Christmas," was a message from the dogs.
