Hunter Biden says he is being investigated by the federal government about his taxes

Hunter Biden made a statement Wednesday that he is under federal investigation over his taxes.

"I first learned yesterday that the US Attorney's Office in Delaware also told my legal advisor yesterday that they were investigating my tax affairs," Biden said.

The statement was made by President-Elect Joe Biden and the Transitional Office of Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris.

The Associated Press reported that the Justice Department is reviewing some of Hunter Biden's Chinese deals – and the investigation began in 2018. New subpoenas were sent out Tuesday, including to Biden.

"I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will show that I have handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional accountants," said Hunter Biden.

Hunter Biden's testimony was accompanied by a testimony from his father, the president-elect.

"President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son who has overcome difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of the past few months, to come out stronger," said Joe Biden.

A spokesman for the US Attorney's Office in Delaware told DailyMail.com, "We are unable to comment on an ongoing investigation" when asked about the origin of the investigation and the investigators' precise investigation.

Hunter Biden's businesses – particularly in Ukraine and China – have been politically problematic for his father for more than a year. Hunter Biden did business overseas while his father served as Vice President of President Barack Obama. He has been accused of benefiting from his father's political career.

President Donald Trump's impeachment included a plan to pressure the Ukrainian President to announce an investigation into Hunter and Joe Biden – a likely 2020 rival – while $ 400 in military aid was withheld.

It was said that Hunter Biden was under investigation when the New York Post published emails in October from a laptop allegedly owned by the younger Biden, containing content that Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani had given the newspaper.

CNN reported Wednesday that an investigation into Hunter Biden's business relationships in China in the run-up to the elections has been suspended because Justice Department policies prohibit any action that could affect the outcome.

But now federal agencies are actively scrutinizing the younger Biden's business, including whether Hunter Biden and his staff violated tax and money laundering laws doing business overseas but mostly in China, CNN said.

The network also reported that some of the transactions involved people believed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to raise counter-espionage concerns, which in turn is a problem for the Chinese.

Fox News Channel reported that Hunter Biden is a "subject / target" of the grand jury investigation. A target means that there is a "high probability that a person has committed a crime," and a topic is someone you "don't know for sure" who has committed a crime.

According to Fox's sources, transactions from “China and other foreign nations” sparked suspicious activity reports that prompted the investigation.

Fox said the investigation began in 2018, which means it came before Trump-friendly Attorney General Bill Barr, who assumed the senior position in the Justice Department.

Barr has publicly stated that the president-elect will not be investigated, and two sources have told CNN that the investigation does not allege any wrongdoing by Joe Biden.

One item of interest to investigators could be a 2.8-carat diamond gift to Hunter Biden in 2017 by CEFC China Energy founder and former chairman Ye Jianming after a business meeting in Miami, CNN said.

The diamond was part of the original investigation, but it's unclear if it's still a focus, the network reported.

Describing receiving the diamond during his interview with The New Yorker in July 2019, Hunter Biden said that after meeting Ye and an offer to use his contacts, the diamond would help the Chinese businessman identify liquefied natural gas projects in the US help was sent to his hotel room.

Hunter Biden said he did not interpret it as a bribe. "What would you bribe me for?" he asked. "My father wasn't in the office."

But he decided not to keep the gem.

“I knew it wasn't a good idea to take. I just thought it was funny, ”he said.

Hunter Biden said he gave the diamond to one of his employees and he doesn't know what happened to it.

NBC News also reported that Hunter Biden and his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle had an IRS lien against them for unpaid taxes of $ 112,805.09 – although it's unclear whether this is related to the ongoing investigation.

However, Buhle listed "a large diamond" among Hunter Biden's possessions in her divorce papers.

She valued the diamond at $ 80,000. Hunter Biden said it was worth closer to $ 10,000.

Ye was later arrested by Chinese authorities as part of an anti-corruption investigation, the New Yorker said, and a deal he and Hunter Biden were working on in Louisiana failed. Hunter Biden told the magazine that he didn't believe Ye was a "seedy character" at all and called what happened "bad luck".

Reporters from CNN said they were already working on a story about the federal investigation and were seeking comment when the statement from the Biden-Harris transition team came out.

Joe Biden's statement on Wednesday reflected the support he gave his son during the first presidential debate against Trump, who mocked Hunter Biden for drug use.

Biden had just been talking about Beau Biden when the President stepped in. “Are you talking about Hunter? He was kicked out of the military for using cocaine. & # 39;

“My son, like many people, like many people you know at home, had a drug problem. He fixed it, he worked on it. And I'm proud of him. I'm proud of my son, ”said the former vice president.
