Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi tested positive for Covid-19 after taking a precautionary measure, his press office said.

Mr Berlusconi is currently in isolation at his Arcore residence near Milan, his office said, adding that he will continue to work from there once he has completed the required quarantine period.

The three-time prime minister and media tycoon was recently pictured with an old friend, businessman Flavio Briatore, who was hospitalized after testing positive for Covid-19 last month. Mr. Berlusconi had tested negative at this point.

The infamous Lothario recently made headlines after being photographed with his newest flame, Forza Italia 30-year MP Marta Fascina.

Mr Berlusconi and the blonde were photographed hand in hand by a telephoto lens on the jetty of his Sardinian villa last month.

However, Italian media have reported that Mr Berlusconi wanted the published photos to settle a score with his former lover.

Mr Berlusconi, who was previously married twice, broke off his ten-year relationship with Francesca Pascale, 35, in March – reportedly for 20 million euros – before dating Ms. Fascina, four years younger than Ms. Pascale.

But Ms. Pascale unexpectedly made the front pages when she sunbathed topless and kissed Paola Turci, 55, a pop star, on a yacht.

Mr Berlusconi's pictures came just days after his ex-fiancée stole the limelight with her new romantic partner.

"He knew full well that paparazzi would see him stepping on that footbridge," Livio Colombo, deputy editor of Oggi magazine, told The Times.

"(Marta) Fascina wears a dress straight from a bucolic painting from a century ago, suggesting that she and Berlusconi wanted to look old-fashioned in response to (Francesca) Pascale's" modern "relationship with another woman."

Mr Berlusconi recently brought new attention to the Italian political scene ahead of the regional elections in late September, when his centrist Forza Italia party could prove crucial to a possible victory for the center-right opposition.
