The BBC was previously accused of "complacency" over the staggering £ 87 million bill set in March for their new EastEnders.

Nicknamed the E20 after the soap's fictional zip code, the project was £ 27 million over budget and is not expected to be fully completed until May 2023, almost five years late.

MPs said the BBC bosses "poorly" managed construction and made "a serious mistake" by neglecting what project management skills they needed. The public finance committee said it contracted poorly, which increased the cost dramatically.

The committee also found that contract negotiations were taking six months longer than planned, in part due to discussions about which stones should be used in the set. Meanwhile, the company spent £ 50,000 on samples.

MPs added that they were "disappointed with the BBC's complacency in managing this project, especially in the early stages".
