Earthquake in Turkey: Rescuers search for survivors at night

Rescuers search for survivors in Turkey during the night after people fled their homes on Greek islands after a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake – 22 dead and nearly 800 injured.

Search and rescue teams dug through heavy concrete blocks, desperately looking for survivors from the catastrophic earthquake.

Turkey and Greece were struck today by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that killed at least 22 people, flattened buildings and caused a mini tsunami that flooded the streets in terrible scenes on the Turkish coast.

Debris sped through Turkish streets after an apparent flood near Izmir that destroyed at least seventeen buildings, and footage showed people climbing over the debris of collapsed multi-story blocks.

At least 22 people were killed and nearly 800 injured in the earthquake, while two teenagers were killed in Greece when the wall of a building collapsed on the island of Samos, according to the Turkish Disaster Agency.

The mini-tsunami also reached Samos, where islanders were told to avoid the coast after some fled their homes because of the quake also felt in Athens and near Albania, northern Macedonia and Bulgaria.

According to the Turkish Disaster Agency, at least 244 aftershocks were registered, of which 24 were more than 4 on the Richter scale.

The footage shows a collapsing building filling the air with dust as people try to protect themselves.

Gokhan Kan, a 32-year-old courier, said, “I thought, will it end? It felt like 10 minutes like it was never going to end.

"At that moment, I wasn't afraid of myself, but of my family, my wife and my four-year-old son."

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said Friday's earthquake was concentrated in the Aegean Sea at a depth of 16 km.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said six buildings collapsed in two parts of Izmir, while Mayor Tunc Soyer said nearly 20 buildings collapsed in the province.

In one place Agriculture Minister Bekir Pakdemirli managed to establish cell phone contact with a girl buried under the rubble.

"We ask you to keep calm," he said on TV. "We'll try to lift the concrete block and reach you."

A small tsunami hit the Seferisar district in Izmir, said Haluk Ozener, director of Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory and the Earthquake Research Institute.

Of the twenty-two confirmed deaths, one person drowned in floods after the earthquake, while the others were believed to be buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Pictures from the Turkish disaster zone showed smoke blowing over the city of Izmir, debris washed away by floods, and dazed people trying to get through debris on the streets.

In Izmir, there were 38 ambulances, two ambulance helicopters and 35 medical rescue teams on the scene, with television footage showing police using chainsaws to push their way through the rubble. Local media said 70 people were saved alive from the rubble.

Turkish media said the earthquake was felt in the Aegean and Marmara regions where Istanbul is located. However, the Istanbul governor said there were no reports of damage.

Soylu said there were no reports of casualties from six other provinces where the earthquake was felt, but there were small cracks in some buildings.

Ilke Cide, a graduate student who was in the Guzelbahce region of Izmir during the earthquake, said he walked inland after the water rose after the earthquake. "I'm very used to earthquakes … so I didn't take it very seriously at first, but this time it was really scary," he said, adding that the earthquake lasted at least 25-30 seconds.

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: "With all means of our state we stand by our citizens affected by the earthquake." "We have taken measures to start the necessary work in the region with all relevant institutions and ministers," he said.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis later spoke to Erdogan to offer his condolences to the victims in Turkey and said: "Whatever our differences, these are the times when our people must stand together."

Erdogan tweeted: “Thank you, Prime Minister. That two neighbors show solidarity in difficult times is more valuable than many things in life. & # 39;

France, which had gotten into an angry dispute with Turkey in recent weeks, also offered its "full solidarity" with both Turkey and Greece.

Tensions between Ankara and Paris reached a peak last weekend when President Erdogan questioned the mental health of his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake had an epicenter eight miles from Samos, where the island's 45,000 people have been told to stay away from coastal areas.

Greece's top seismologist, Eftyhmis Lekkas, told the Greek media: "It was a very big earthquake, it's difficult to have a bigger one."

People stormed the streets in Samos and other islands after Greek officials set the tremor at 6.6 and the US Geological Survey set it at 7.0.

"Wir haben so etwas noch nie erlebt", sagte ein örtlicher Beamter. "Die Leute geraten in Panik." Die Polizei sagte, einige alte Gebäude auf der Insel seien beschädigt worden.

Both countries reported aftershocks.
