HOW TO BE TESTED BEFORE FLYING

More and more countries, including Italy, Cyprus and Barbados, are requiring travelers to submit a negative Covid-19 PCR test result prior to their arrival. This is how it works:

  • The timeframe for your test ranges from seven days to 72 hours before you travel or arrive – check out what applies to you and consider time zones too. Age limits for children vary.
  • Travel tests are not available in the NHS. You need to visit a private clinic or use an online service that publishes a kit. Search "How to Take a Coronavirus Self-Test Swab" on YouTube for a helpful NHS video. Some laboratories have less service on weekends. When time is short, deliver your sample in person or by courier instead of relying on the post office.
  • The price varies considerably. Your airline may have a connection to a test provider – British Airways uses CityDoc (citydoc.org.uk), with a passenger cost starting at £ 93. Nomad Travel (nomadtravel.co.uk) has clinics in six UK cities with fees starting at £ 160. If you're in a hurry, a same day test at Fleetstreetclinic.com in London costs £ 495.
  • Your result and a test certificate will usually be emailed to you within 48 hours (remember to check your spam folder). If negative, print out the test certificate, fill out any other required online forms and enjoy your vacation.
  • If your test is positive, cancel your trip. You may be able to rebook or file a claim if your insurance company has Covid-19 coverage – some post office guidelines (postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance).
