Chelsea's preparations for the new season have been in turmoil after being hit by a coronavirus outbreak.

The club in west London confirmed that a number of players have tested positive for Covid-19 and are in quarantine to limit the risk of further spread in Frank Lampard's squad.

Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Fikayo Tomori are reportedly in self-isolation under government guidelines after they were pictured on vacation in the Greek island of Mykonos before pre-season training began last weekend.

The four players are believed to have not yet contacted Chelsea in Cobham to minimize the risk of possible infection. It is not known if Mount, Abraham, Pulisic, and Tomori were among the stars who tested positive. The sun called the players isolated.

All players were given coronavirus tests late last week before returning to pre-season training.

However, due to the need for quarantine, some Chelsea players have yet to report to the club's Cobham headquarters.

Before Chelsea players went through their controls, it emerged last week that there had been a sharp spike in cases across the league after the summer break for players across the league.

Fourteen positive tests were recorded at 12 different clubs that returned to pre-season training early last week, including Sheffield United, West Ham and Brighton.

This summer, Mykonos has proven to be the go-to place for Premier League footballers to be an alternative to the usual hangouts in Las Vegas, Ibiza and Marbella – all places where the Foreign Office advises against all non-essential travel.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was given a 21-month suspended sentence on Tuesday after convicted of aggravated assault. He resisted arrest and repeated attempts at bribery following a dispute on the Greek island of Mykonos last week.

However, he may have to wait up to two years for his appeal to be heard in Greece due to a backlog of legal cases.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have confirmed left-back Ben Chilwell signing for around £ 50m from Leicester. And they are on the verge of taking their summer shopping spree above the £ 220 million mark by closing a deal for German star Kai Havertz.

Attacking midfielder Havertz closes his Bayer Leverkusen record on Wednesday. Seasoned defender Thiago Silva (35) will also be there for free after leaving the Champions League runner-up, Paris Saint-Germain.

Chilwell signed a five-year contract worth up to £ 190,000 a week after passing a medical exam that included a heel injury review from the end of last season.

The 23-year-old is Lampard's third newcomer. After the signings of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, his summer spending is around £ 136 million.

Chelsea are backing Lampard in the transfer market to bridge the gap with runaway champions Liverpool and Manchester City runners-up.

Chilwell has long been Lampard's No. 1 target for left-backs. Sportsmail In October, Chelsea announced that following prior interest from Manchester City, Chelsea had emerged as the front runner for his signature.

Alongside Havertz and Silva, Chelsea are on the verge of snatching free agent Malang Sarr before the 21-year-old French defender is loaned out. They still remain in the market for a goalkeeper and another center-back. Either Emerson Palmieri or Marcos Alonso will depart upon Chilwell's arrival.
