The show – which spawned a star in Mary Tyler Moore, who was cast as Dick Van Dyke's TV wife – featured Reiner himself as the moody variety host Alan Brady.

Reiner began acting in 1950 and has appeared on several Broadway musicals, including Inside USA and Alive and Kicking.

In the same year, however, he got his first TV break in Sid Caesar's variety show Your Show of Shows, in which he went on the air in skits and at the same time had the opportunity to write with Mel Brooks and Neil Simon.

For his efforts, Reiner received two Emmys in the supporting category in 1956 and 1957.

His collaboration with Mel Brooks would be fruitful as they banded together as a comedy duo and appeared in films such as It & # 39; sa Mad, Mad, Mad, World (1963) and The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (1966) . as well as the film series of the ocean from 2001 to 2007.

Reiner and Brooks have a longstanding friendship that began with their famous & # 39; 2000 Year Old Man & # 39; sketches in which Brooks plays a 2000 year old man interviewed by Reiner.

The entertainer, who was born in The Bronx, New York City in 1922, to his Jewish immigrant parents, had great success as a film director in the 1970s and 1980s. He worked with Steve Martin on his films, including The Jerk (1979).

The last film he made himself was the 1997 Rome Com That Old Feeling with Bette Midler and Dennis Farina.

He played a guest role at Frasier in the 1990s, won another Emmy for a guest role as Alan Brady at Mad About You in 1995, and also had roles at Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, and House.

It was impressive that Reiner was in great demand well into his 80s and 90s and played recurring roles in hit sitcoms such as Two and a Half Men and Hot in Cleveland, in which he appeared alongside Betty White, the star of the Golden Girls .

He was also a popular voice actor recently, working on popular shows such as Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill and Bob & # 39; s Burgers.

In 2017, Reiner appeared in the HBO documentary If You Are Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast, along with many of his non-genre colleagues, including his comedy partner Mel Brooks and Kirk Douglas.

The comedy legend had three children with his wife Estelle Lebost, Lucas, Annie and Rob, who died in 2008. His son Rob Reiner became a successful Hollywood film director, best known for The Princess Bride (1987) and A Few Good Men (1992).

His other children, Annie Reiner, became playwrights and poets, while son Lucas Reiner is a painter and graphic artist.

Before his showbiz career, Reiner had finished school at 16 and worked as a machinist while also studying drama. He joined the army during World War II, where he traveled to South Pacific bases to bring troops with his acting talents to G.I. Revues.

Outside of his entertainment career, Reiner recently focused his efforts on being a staunch opponent of Donald Trump alongside his activist son Rob Reiner, the filmmaker.

In October 2018, he released a powerful anti-Trump video, initially saying, "I've seen a lot of things in my life. I have been through the Great Depression. I served in our fight against fascism in World War II. I saw the invention of television and played on television before my family owned one. & # 39;

Then he challenged Trump's honesty and said, "But what I've never seen is that the American people are being lied to about everything every day. Lies about climate change. Lies about Medicare protection and social security. Lies about Russia attacking our elections. Lies about protecting people with pre-existing conditions. & # 39;

"I've seen a lot of things in my 96.5 years," he concluded. "But the only thing I can't stand is that America is being destroyed by racism, scaremongering and lies. Fortunately, we can do something about it. On November 6, we can vote for elected officials who will hold this President accountable. & # 39;

Reiner had previously spoken about his disapproval of Trump and tweeted in 2018: "At 96 and 6 months, I have an incentive to hang around (until I'm 98) so I can vote for anyone who runs against our false President Trump."

People were encouraged by his message, and in response, he wrote back: “Your reaction to my desire to live at least until I can vote for someone to put the trumpeter in the dumpster has made me smile the broadest are able to smile on my lips … – the one who broke out when I looked my three toddlers in the face for the first time. & # 39;
