An Air India Express plane flying from Dubai to Calicut with 191 passengers on board fell into a valley after overshooting the runway at the destination.

Images shared on social media show an airplane that broke in two and lies in a valley near Calicut Airport in the Indian state of Kerala.

Police reports said the pilot and one other person were killed in the disaster. Another 35 people were injured in the crash.

"The Dubai-Kozhikode Air India flight (IX-1344) slipped at around 7.45pm (2.45pm GMT) today while landing at Karipur Airport," Kondotty police told ANI news agency.

According to local media, 15 ambulances took part in the crash and took the injured passengers and crew to nearby hospitals.

In a tweet, the former Minister of State for Tourism said that although many passengers were injured, "all passengers were evacuated" and the only death he reported was that of the pilot.

"Second tragedy of the day in Kerala: Air India Express slips off the runway in Kozhikode, the front part splits, the pilot dies and many passengers are injured," wrote former Minister of State for Tourism, KJ Alphons.
